DoStudio is dead forever? help needed.

Post by Starproof »

As a long time Sony DoStudio (Indie/BDJ) user authoring commercial blu-ray discs, I think this program is finally dead and gone forever. Projects will no longer compile, when it reaches the mux stage, there is just a parser error. It looks like there is some licence or certificate that has expired, and I can find no way to get it running again.

My question is, which is the best program to replace it? Blu-Disc Studio? KITe Java? UHD?

My projects are usually pretty simple, for example:

unskippable warning/logo (client mandated!)
a few trailers
video main menu with play main feature button, scenes submenus, setup submenu with audio and subtitle toggles, extras submenu
popup menu within feature with return to main menu button, scenes submenu and setup submenu

BDCMF's formatted and sent to Technicolor Poland for replication, if that helps?

assets mostly created and encoded through Adobe premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop

and that's about it.

so far i've only worked just in basic 2D 1080 content

So i need a replacement with at least these functionalities.

Sorry for the long post.

Oh, and I'm Jim, by the way :)

Hi Jim,

If you need BDCMF, but don't need UHD - Blu-Disc Studio MX Pro. Regular MX does not have CMF module, standard BDS does not have even internal muxer.

You can just request a trial and try the "Simple menu" project first (https://blu-disc.net/examples).

Basically, everything you have mentioned is available.
There are some nuances about unskippable warnings/logos: these should be the first play movies, only Play MOVIE commands, unconditional. Or you will need to use the second JAR.

And there is "Import DoStudio projects". But you will need to adjust import settings, as applications use different logic.

Hi Jim,

I too was a long time user of DoStudio Indie ( 10+ years ) and when I was asked to make the jump to 4K discs I settled on KITe Java and never looked back. I imported a DoStudio project into KITe and took @ 1-2 days to get my head around the new software but found the transision very easy and logical. I look at KITe as what DoStudio might evolved into if Sony hadn't bought and killed it off.

I never had a play around with Blu-Disc Studio but can whole heartly recommend either KITe UHD Java or KITe 2D+3D Java as the next generation replacement for DoStudio.

Feel free to PM me if you are still deciding and have any questions.
Matt
